Nicholas Needs Your Help!
We’d like to introduce you to Nicholas - another cat in need of special help. He is a young cat at the shelter in need of surgery on both of his hind legs to remedy a condition where his kneecaps, the patellae, move out of their grooves making it very uncomfortable and impossible for Nicholas to walk normally. This is most likely a congenital defect, along with the fact that he was also born with only one eye. Nicholas has a rough time ahead of him if he does not have surgery to repair both rear knees. The veterinarian, Dr Rachael Jones, who examined him, also did x- rays, which were sent to orthopedic specialists to evaluate Nicholas’ surgical candidacy. The surgery was recommended for Nicholas. | We would very much like Nicholas to have the surgery as soon as possible so that he will be able to walk and play again -- but as you may imagine surgery of this sort is very expensive. If you would like to contribute funds to help Nicholas, it would be greatly appreciated. You can donate via PayPal, or send a check to the shelter. |
Out of the ordinary surgical expense is beyond the scope of the shelter budget unless the funds are raised through special collections. It is difficult to ask for help again so soon after the generous response to a previous request, but we have to ask for Nicholas’ sake. He will have a long recovery, which won’t be easy for a young, lively fellow. We know that Nicholas is undaunted by his blindness in one eye - he takes his handicap in stride and we believe true to his spirit he will overcome this obstacle as well - with a little help from his friends.... If you are able to help please do! Thank you very, very much, Cat Care Committee
Update: Tuesday 8/1/06 (per Marti and Sue)The specialists at Purdue University Veterinary Clinic examined Nicholas on June 23rd. The doctors there found that Nicholas was anemic and declined to do the surgery. In addition Nicholas was found to have some other issues in his conformation, which the proposed surgery would not correct. This meant that his condition could recur even if he had the surgery. Further blood tests did not reveal a reason for his anemia. At this time other therapies are being investigated with a local veterinarian in order to help Nicholas. Although he did not have the surgery, funds contributed for his care will be used to provide for Nicholas' ongoing treatment. Thank you to all of you who generously donated funds for his care!
